WWE SmackDown Live Results – January 8, 2019

Becky Lynch defeats Charlotte Flair and Carmella – New number one contender

I don’t know what happened in this match, mainly because there was an advert every four minutes.

From what I did see, Becky and Charlotte mostly carried Carmella through a match that she was mostly outside the ring for.

Becky locked in the disarm-her to beat ‘Mella, and now it’s Becky vs Asuka at the Royal Rumble. This would suggest that Becky is not in the Royal Rumble match and will have to find another way to qualify to face Ronda at ‘Mania.

Still, Becky vs Asuka should be fun.

Not all that much more has happened to be honest. We had a very nice tribute to Gene Okerlund, much like we did on Raw, and now we’re halfway through a match between The Usos and The Bar.

If The Usos win, they will earn another match against Sheamus and Cesaro, this time for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.

The Bar defeat The Usos via pinfall

We’ve seen this match at least 5,000 times, but it is of course a great match with lots of wonderfully tag-team wrestling.

The Usos come up short after Mandy Rose comes out in a bathrobe, and asks whichever Uso it is that she’s hitting on by asking whether she left her shorts and top in his hotel room.

This allows Cesaro to hit one of the Usos with the Neutralizer for the win. Dammit Mandy.

Out comes The Miz to challenge Sheamus and Cesaro to a match at the Royal Rumble. The kick Miz in the face, and then accept his challenge.

Rusev is in the ring to talk about the injury his wife Lana sustained last week. He explains that Nakamura causing the injury is crossing a line, and invites him to the ring for a fight.

But Nakamura doesn’t come out, and instead we see him in the video truck, where he explains that the injury was actually Rusev’s fault, and plays a clip from last week.

Now, I’m not saying Lana is weak, but if she needs to take a week off because of a tiny back bump then maybe wrestling isn’t for her.

Rusev runs to the back and is attacked by Nakamura with a brace of Kinshasa knees.

Next up, The Usos vs The Bar.

Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas & Samoa Joe defeat Rey Mysterio & Mustafa Ali via pinfall

Well that was a very good match. Amazing what you can do when you give talented people time to have a match.

Mustafa Ali once again exhibited how much of an asset he could prove to be to the main roster, diving around the ring like a gazelle.

Corey Graves said the word “piledriver” which almost certainly means he’ll be sacked tomorrow because that’s a banned word. Naughty Corey.

Rey and Ali seemed to have the match in the bag, but Almas caught Rey’s 619 attempt, hit him with a Gutbuster and then the Hammelock DDT for the win.

Daniel Bryan defeats R-Truth via pinfall

That wasn’t very difficult for him, but then who expected it to be?

R-Truth got a few moves in, but he fell pretty quickly to the running knee.

The main interest came after the match, when an incensed AJ Styles attacked Bryan after his match. Styles faces Bryan for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble.

Next up is Rey Mysterio & Mustafa Ali vs. Samoa Joe & Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas. Should be good.

Daniel Bryan opening the show to remind everyone that caring about the environment makes you a giant heel.

Not only does he throw a hotdog and a drink over fans, but he reminds us that the yes movement is over.

It’s tricky to hate the man to be honest. He’s saying lots of genuinely good things that people should listen to, but he’s doing them with a grumpy face, so it’s actually bad.

Before he gets too carried away, he’s attacked by R-Truth ahead of their match and we get our first advert break of the night.

It’s the new era or something. Despite some minor promising signs last night on Raw, nothing really seems to have changed. Will SmackDown Live be any different?
