The match NXT fans have been craving has finally been announced with Johnny Gargano facing his former friend and DIY partner Tomasso Ciampa in an unsanctioned match at NXT Takeover: New Orleans.

The heartbreaking heel turn of Ciampa has gripped the NXT crowd for nearly a year now after the feud was halted last spring due to Ciampa sustaining a torn ACL. The injury has arguably been a blessing in disguise as it has allowed the feud to build in the background over a long period of time. Ciampa finally returned in January at NXT Takeover: Philadelphia and attacked Gargano directly after he lost the biggest match of his life against Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas.
Ciampa continued to crush his former partner’s dreams when he cost Gargano his championship rematch in February which resulted in Gargano being forced to leave NXT as per the stipulation of that match. This didn’t deter Gargano from having his revenge, however, as he has attempted to attack Ciampa outside Full Sail Arena and even waited outside his home in the early hours of the morning in the following weeks.
This led NXT General Manager William Regal to make the match official under unsanctioned rules with the added stipulation that if Gargano loses, he leaves NXT for good. The bitter hatred and the storied history between the two superstars draws a resemblance to Triple H and Shawn Michaels’ feud which also began with an unsanctioned match at Summerslam 2002.
This match between two of NXT‘s best in-ring performers could very well eclipse that legendary bout and has the potential to not only steal the show at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans but WrestleMania weekend as a whole.
