WWE is clearly in a selling mood following the sales of Raw and SmackDown‘s TV rights.
It’s been a very profitable few weeks for the company as both flagship shows have received huge price tags and sold for unfathomable amounts of money.
However, this reported next business venture is a bit of a headscratcher, as it seemingly will devalue the WWE Network.
WrestleMania for Sale?
Supposedly, WWE‘s biggest show of the year, WrestleMania, may be heading to network television in the future.
According to Ringside News, the company is “open to the idea” of putting The Show of Shows on free TV. This is baffling in thought, but surprisingly makes a lot of sense. If McMahon can shop out his two prized weekly shows for loads of cash, imagine what he could pull for the single biggest wrestling show on the planet. A deal could turn into a massive profit, as they would get money from whichever network was willing to buy, and would still have income from all of their Network subscribers.
However, this is a troubling statement of the company’s view of the WWE Network.
They’ve plunged a lot of money into it with the major selling point being every pay-per-view essentially being given away for free. Now, though, WWE clearly believes it’s more profitable to literally give WrestleMania away for free.
In return, they’ll receive a huge paycheck from TV companies, rather than their fans.
Of course, as of now this is all rumor and should be taken with a pinch of salt. It will be interesting to see if a deal does indeed go down and we get WrestleMania for free.
