Yesterday we reported that WWE officials had travelled to Japan in order to start work on a brand new NXT Japan promotion to go alongside NXT UK and the US brand.
Triple H has spoken directly about WWE’s goal to open performance centres across the world, in countries such as India, Japan and Germany.
The officials travelling to Japan have apparently been in charge of putting out feelers to promotions and wrestlers in Japan in the hope that they will be the basis for the promotion.
WWE have had decent success through signing Japanese stars before, with the likes of Shinsuke Nakamura and Asuka both holding titles in NXT and on the main roster. Former NJPW star KUSHIDA is expected to start at NXT in the next few weeks, so it’s a country WWE is beginning to familiarise itself with.
Io Shirai and Kairi Sane are starting to tear it up in NXT too, so WWE has a good set of stars to perhaps lure other Japanese wrestlers in with.
WWE already has a working relationship with Japanese promotion NOAH, so it could perhaps use this to bolster an NXT roster in the country.
There are fears among fans and critics that WWE simply doesn’t understand the Japanese market, and that attempting a voyage into Japan is a step too far.
Do you think NXT Japan will be a success? Let us know in the comments.
