When R-Truth was having United States Championship Open Challenges he would reference John Cena as his ”childhood hero”, this led many to speculate that Cena would be answering a Truth Open Challenge at WrestleMania 35.
When R-Truth dropped the Championship to Samoa Joe, fans then suggested that the 16-time World Champion would start a feud with Joe, leading to a WrestleMania match between the pair, something that was actually planned for WrestleMania 34 before Samoa Joe got injured. However, on last night’s Smackdown, Rey Mysterio announced that he will be challenging for the United States Championship, putting to bed those rumours.
Another rumoured match for WrestleMania was Kurt Angle vs. John Cena in the former’s ”farewell match”. These rumours intensified when it was announced Angle would reveal his final opponent at Raw in the Allstate Arena in Chicago, the same arena that Cena debuted against the former WWE Champion in 2002. However, Angle announced he would be facing Baron Corbin instead.
This had left Cena’s place on the card for WrestleMania 35 in limbo, and on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, it was said that ”Cena reportedly doesn’t have an opponent for WrestleMania.”.
It should also be noted that Cena is not the only wrestler to have his planned matches changed for the big show, Andrade vs. Rey Mysterio was pencilled in as a match at the ‘show of shows’. However, after last night’s announcement, that clearly isn’t the plan anymore.
However, it should be noted that the announcement of Angle vs. Corbin generated huge fan backlash, something that the commentary team unusually acknowledged. John Cena could still be planned as a surprise replacement for Corbin in the match to swerve the plans at the show.
