Exactly one week before WrestleMania, the biggest story in the wrestling world had nothing to do with Becky Lynch, Seth Rollins, or Kofi Kingston. Instead, it came from John Oliver in a scathing hit piece on WWE. The former Daily Show correspondent and current host of Last Week Tonight on HBO launched a fierce attack on WWE, slamming the company’s treatment of its talent.

Oliver’s main points deal with WWE‘s treatment of its wrestlers as independent contractors. Legally, independent contractors are self-employed, this means that companies have fewer responsibilities to them as to employees, but the contractors have more independence in their careers.
We’ve decided to take a look at the United States’ legal guidelines that distinguish independent contractors from employees. In doing so, we found these points that seem to validate John Oliver’s view of wrestlers as employees, and four changes WWE could make in response to solidify independent contractor status.
