Last month, former Intercontinental Champion Harper publically requested his WWE released on Twitter. This has been followed up by the report that WWE has no intention of granting said released and allowing him to leave. It was said that this was likely because of AEW’s interest in the former Smackdown Tag Team Champion.
Harper was set to return to WWE TV after WrestleMania for a feud with Sami Zayn. However, Vince McMahon reportedly scrapped those plans as he is still angry at Harper for not being able to do a Southern accent when asked to as part of the Wyatt Family four years ago.
Per Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Harper met with Mr McMahon and asked if he could be released when his contract expires in November 2019 rather than having six months added to his deal for injury time as there were no plans to use him.
Vince told Harper to take this issue up with Triple H, which is interesting as it was reported that Goldust was only released from WWE because Triple H convinced his father-in-law. Triple H, however, did not offer the same help to Harper and failed to respond.
Meltzer added that Harper is not set for any future bookings with WWE, and there are currently no plans to use the immensely talented worker again. He will be able to leave WWE in April, 2020 after his current deal, with the added injury time, expires.
