According to Cody during an AEW Media Call, he’s free to use the Rhodes name and doesn’t need WWE’s permission. After leaving WWE, Cody went to New Japan and became known as “The American Nightmare” Cody.
Cody went by a singular name in PWG, ROH, NJPW, Impact, and, now, AEW. Due to him not using his name, many websites speculated it was because WWE owned the name.
He said he got used to using the name in New Japan. He also said he loved the idea of trying to get a single name over.
Who knew Madonna and Pink were some of Cody’s idols?
He said he had gotten the rub off his father for long enough. He wanted to prove himself.

He said WWE isn’t holding the name hostage and we should expect to see it from time to time. Similarly, he said he could use the name anytime he wants and Vince McMahon wouldn’t come after him.
He said there’s a mutual respect between families and they would respect his use of the name.
Cody’s wife Brandi uses the Rhodes name. However, Cody isn’t sure if Pharaoh would be going by Pharaoh Rhodes or not.
