It was been reported during several interviews that Vince McMahon soured on Luke Harper several years ago when the former Intercontinental Champion failed to do a Southern accent whilst in The Wyatt Family.
It has since been believed that this was the beginning of the end for Harper in WWE, but the new AEW star has claimed that another moment sparked the beginning of his burial within the company.
Back in 2017, Luke Harper (now Brodie Lee) was arguably on the run of his career and was involved in the WrestleMania feud over the WWE Champion between Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt.
Fan support for Harper was so strong at the time that many fans online started pitching for him to be part of the WWE Championship match on the “grandest stage of them all”.
However, Brodie Lee revealed to Chris Jericho during a recent Talk is Jericho podcast that he believes he began being buried in WWE during that run in a spot with former WWE Champion AJ Styles:
“We did an angle with Randy [Orton] where he turned, I got over. We got all the way to a championship match battle royal. I think me and AJ got down to the last two. We did a spot where we go over on the floor and we hit it at the same time to do a match the next week. In rehearsal, I hit it no problem. It was beautiful. Of course, in the actual execution of it, I f*cked it up a little bit my ass slid on the apron. Either he touched first or I did, but it was obvious that one of us touched first.
“They shot around it and they explained that ‘No, no they touched at the same time.’ Then the next week AJ who was the heel ended up making me tap and pinning me in the same match. Like, they re-started the match and I was like, ‘Yup, this is the end.’ This is it.”
A few months after WrestleMania 33, Harper would reunite with Erick Rowan as the duo formed The Bludgeon Brothers. the pair would go on to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.
