A new champion was crowned during tonight’s edition of WWE NXT on the USA Network, the final episode before TakeOver: In Your House this Sunday.
El Hijo del Fantasma is the interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion, having defeated Drake Maverick in the final of the tournament today. Maverick fought from under all match but NXT’s masked kidnappers distracted him and cost him the match.
The title has been awarded on an interim basis as Jordan Devlin, who won the Cruiserweight Title at Worlds Collide last December, is unable to travel or perform due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Fantasma got through his group with a 2-1 record, last picking up a win over Akira Tozawa to top the leaderboard. Both men finished at 2-1, but Fantasma got through on the head-to-head rule.
Maverick’s road was a bit longer as he had an extra match. He, Kushida and Jake Atlas all finished their group with 2-1 records, and last week Maverick won a three-way between them to qualify. It came a bit controversially as he pinned Atlas as Atlas was already tapping to a Kushida armbar, but Kushida told Maverick he could take the win.
Maverick was released by WWE on April 15 along with several other performers and hundreds of company staff due to cost-cutting measures. After the match though, Triple H came out and offered him a new NXT contract, which he was very excited to accept.
