If you remember when Konnan came into WCW, then you’ll remember he got a quick push and the United States Championship fairly quickly. As a fan of WCW at the time, it seemed odd for this guy to come from out of nowhere and start working programs with guys like Ric Flair.
However, if you followed big-time wrestling in Mexico then you would have known Konnan was a major star. In fact, he was such a huge star he was supposed to have a program with the biggest star in WCW at the time. Konnan revealed the following on his Keeping it 100 Podcast:
“When I first came in, one of the things that Kevin Sullivan told me, which is why there is an old picture you will see every now and then where we are holding a belt and we are both pointing at each other. We were going to have a match in the United States and a match in Mexico. This was never told to me, but I would like to get Kevin Sullivan on the show and asked him. They put the U.S. championship on me real quick. They pushed me really fast really quick and I think they found out real quick that this guy doesn’t even know how to wrestle American style. He only knows how to wrestle Mexican style. Politicking was always part of the game.”
Konnan has been around the wrestling world for a long time. He’s been a fixture in the wrestling world for over 25 years.
You’d have to think it would have drawn big numbers in Mexico. He never quite rose to the main event in WCW but he did have a really great run.
