MJF has been one of the best things about AEW since its launch around twelve months ago. The 24-year-old has impressed fans with his excellent promo work and great in-ring ability.
Chris Jericho has also been fantastic for AEW thus far, doing some of the most entertaining work of his career, and Y2J has revealed that he actually wanted to more closely with MJF in AEW.
An angle in November 2019 saw Jericho offer MJF a spot in the Inner Circle, and it appears that this was more than an on-screen segment as Jericho has revealed that he wanted MJF in the group.
Speaking to Sammy Guevara on his own podcast, Jericho revealed that prior to the launch of AEW, he wanted MJF in his faction, but was told the company had other plans for him:
“The moment that I came to AEW the idea was for me to have a faction. Tony Khan wanted that and thought it was a good idea. I never had a faction before. I thought it was a good idea. Then we had to figure out who we are going to get involved in and throw around different ideas. I saw you (Sammy Guevera) on an NWA show, and I texted Tony Khan and said we should bring you in. I can’t remember the first choice, but I remember saying I would like MJF and they said he is going to do his own thing. I said I think Sammy is kind of the same idea. I wanted a young, upcoming charismatic guy.”
I originally thought MJF should have been part of the Inner Circle, leading to him eventually overthrowing Jericho from the group. However, knowing what we know now, AEW made the right call.
MJF doesn’t need the Inner Circle, he got over with his awesome promo ability and in-ring work. The focus being on Jerico and Sammy has done wonders for Guevara, meaning AEW has two huge stars on their hands for years to come.
