It was announced last night by WWE that in an attempt to “streamline” the creative process, SmackDown Executive Producer Bruce Prichard would be taking over Raw’s creative team too, meaning Paul Heyman would be stepping down with immediate effect.
It has been made clear that Heyman has not bee sacked from his role, and that he will now be focusing on his in-ring career, which presumably means managing Brock Lesnar whenever Brock decides to return.
There have been a variety of reports suggesting that this decision has been coming for a while, but that several Raw stars are still very upset by the news. Particularly younger stars, who Heyman is known for trying to give the spotlight to.
However, many people weren’t shocked at all to hear the news, with one person telling the Wrestling Observer:
“I am shocked it took this long. Everyone knew it was coming. Vince did not like Paul.”
Raw’s ratings have been dropping faster than SmackDown’s in recent weeks, and it appears Vince saw that as Bruce Prichard being a more effective producer than Heyman. We also known that Vince views Prichard as a “yes man” who will largely agree with his decisions, and Vince loves hearing yes.
It’s a real shame, as Raw has been quite comfortably the better of WWE’s two main weekly shows, with SmackDown being criticised for its repetitiveness.
