It was reported that following their matches at WrestleMania 36 and Backlash, Edge and Randy Orton were going to see their rivalry culminate in a match at SummerSlam in August 2020.
However, with Edge out of action with a torn triceps, WWE has had to find another plan for former World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton at the “biggest party of the Summer”.
WrestleTalk exclusively reported several weeks ago that upon hearing about Edge’s injury, Randy Orton began pitching to work with some talent from NXT at SummerSlam next month.
We also reported that due to the pure shortage of heels on the main roster right now, Randy Orton will instead be slotted into a program with WWE Champion Drew McIntyre at the show.
The feud was actually supposed to reportedly started on Monday’s episode of Raw, but plans changed once the script for the show was torn up.
Our initial report has since been confirmed by Dave Meltzer, who had the following to say in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter:
“McIntyre vs. Orton was as of this past week the new scheduled SummerSlam main event. There have been rumors floating that Orton goes over and leads to a match with Edge, but that seems so counterproductive to take the title off McIntyre for Orton.”
Meltzer is commenting on a report that emerged two weeks ago indicating that Randy Orton was going to defeat Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam. You can read more about that by clicking here.
Speaking of Edge, the current plans that WWE has for him at WrestleMania 37, once he has recovered from his injury, have now been revealed. You can also read about that by clicking here.
