One of the lingering fears for promotions such as WWE and AEW is that the state in which they’re currently filming, Florida, could at any moment rule that they are no longer allowed to do so due to COVID-19 regulations.
This is an unlikely scenario given past events, with millions of dollars changing hands between WWE and the state in the form of Linda McMahon’s Super PAC, and WWE being deemed an “essential business”.
Furthermore, according to Dave Meltzer, Vince McMahon has Florida Governor Ron DeSantis “by the balls,” and I guess that’s pretty useful in a time like this when you want to keep your company running despite massive health and safety fears.
However, that doesn’t mean WWE doesn’t have a crisis plan in case DeSantis suddenly started waving Support Biden flags and declaring WWE an obviously unessential business.
According to the Wrestling Observer, one of the WWE’s “several” backup filming locations is the WWE TV studio over in Connecticut, close to WWE’s HQ in Stamford. This is in fact where the Firefly Fun House match between The Fiend and John Cena at WrestleMania 36 was filmed, and it is believed they’d be able to create a similar set up to the Performance Center in Orlando.
The only serious issue with the Connecticut venue is that WWE would not have access to any contracted wrestlers to use as crowd members, which at the moment is a key commodity. The key with Florida is that the Performance Center wrestlers who have been making up the crowd in recent weeks can only do so within the state.
WWE is still very keen on bringing real fans into shows as soon as possible, but it’s unclear as to when they believe this will be possible.
