After Sasha Banks lost her Raw Women’s Championship to Asuka at Summerslam, the focus of the WWE women’s division fell onto SmackDown, and the shock attack on Banks by former best friend and tag partner Bayley.
As a result, the Raw women’s division hasn’t really got a solid direction, and therefore it isn’t really clear who Asuka will be facing at this year’s Clash of Champions, which takes place in just over two weeks time.
The initial plan, as reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, was for Asuka to take on Shayna Baszler. However, Baszler is currently a women’s tag team champion with Nia Jax, and unless they drop the belts ahead of Clash of Champions, she will likely be busy defending the tag straps.
So really, WWE has two weeks to build someone up as a contender for Asuka, who is really lacking in realistic challengers on Monday nights. Meltzer noted that Natalya has been tipped for a title shot for some time now, so it could fall on her veteran shoulders to take on Asuka at the PPV.
