According to a report from Dave Meltzer from earlier this week, WWE’s mentality has shifted and company higher-ups are no longer interested in putting on matches that fans would pay to watch.
Meltzer noted in this week’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, that the WWE Network shows are currently NOT about putting on fans that fans would part with their money to watch:
The mentality, and this isn’t necessarily wrong, is with these shows on the WWE Network and it’s not about presenting matches people will pay to see, the usual mentality of a big show since the beginning of time, it’s just about filling time. At least if that’s the mentality, filling time with a high-quality match is better than just filling time.
This was brought up when Meltzer was writing about Kyle O’Reilly and Finn Balor, who are set to go one-on-one next weekend at NXT TakeOver 31, in a match that has many fans rather excited:
Finn Balor vs. Kyle O’Reilly will headline. O’Reilly won the five-way Gauntlet Eliminator on the 9/23 NXT show. On paper, this is a tremendous match but it comes out of nowhere with O’Reilly having been in a tag situation almost his entire run, and aside from one win over Drake Maverick on 8/26, his previous singles win was October 17, 2018 over Hanson (Ivar). O’Reilly as a worker is anything but a weak contender, but obviously he’s never been presented a singles star.
Speaking of WWE Network shows, tonight we are going to see Clash of Champions, where Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre will defend their Universal and WWE Championships against Jey Uso and Randy Orton respectively.
