Last month, we saw a truly fantastic I Quit Hell in a Cell match for the Universal Championship between Roman Reigns and Jey Uso, but it has emerged that this wasn’t the original plan WWE had for the show.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE wanted to have Roman Reigns defend his title against The Fiend, Braun Strowman and another person in a four-way match on the show:
The original plan for Reigns vs. Uso was just one meeting as the original Hell in a Cell booking was going to be a four-way with Reigns, Fiend, Strowman and a fourth person, which explains the Reigns-Fiend tease that was never followed up on at that time
This is certainly interesting as by the time Hell in a Cell had some around, both The Fiend and Braun Strowman had been drafted over to Raw, meaning the feud would have had to have been built across brands for a few weeks.
At this time, there is no word in who the fourth man in the match was supposed to be, although having Jey Uso in that role certainly would have had sense given the storyline involving himself and Reigns on SmackDown.
