Jim Ross has claimed on his Grilling JR podcast that he had to convince Vince McMahon to sign Randy Orton several years ago, with Orton being described as a “controversial hire”:
“He was, believe it or not, he was somewhat of a controversial hire for us. Vince was the problem child that went to military school and Randy was the problem child that went to the Marines and got discharged. You know, it’s one of those deals where you say, look, I said, ‘Vince, you got a second chance, so why not this kid?’ He’s only a third-generation performer and both his father and his grandfather were outstanding in-ring guys.”
Giving Randy Orton a shot was definitely a good call by WWE. Orton has been a regular fixture on WWE TV for nearly 20 years at this point, holding the WWE or World Heavyweight titles on fourteen occasions.
On SmackDown last night, WWE announced that Randy Orton is going to go one-on-one with Drew McIntyre in a non-title match. The pair feuded for much of the summer over the WWE Championship.
