Over the past few days, rumours have begun to circulate that WWE is planning to have John Cena main event this year’s SummerSlam, and it looks like we now might know who his opponent will be.
Writing in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Melzter noted that John Cena vs. Roman Reigns is current the rumour for the SummerSlam main event. He wrote:
“Stories going around are that WWE has a main event and a guest host to make it stadium-worthy. The leading rumor is Roman Reigns vs. John Cena for the Universal title. We do know that as of last week they were in talks with Cena, that were not finalized, to appear on the July 16 Smackdown show in Houston. We do know people within the company have talked of Reigns vs. Cena as the match but nobody has confirmed it.”
As Meltzer makes clear, this match is not confirmed, but Cena has hinted at a WWE return, and what better way to have him return to the ring than against your biggest star, at the first big show after the promotion resumes its live touring schedule.
Cena reportedly had a bit of heat with WWE earlier this week after he apologised to China for calling Taiwan a country, but it doesn’t seem that the heat is strong enough to stop him returning later this year.
