The reason AEW opened this past Wednesday’s Dynamite ‘Grand Slam’ with Bryan Danielson vs Kenny Omega has been revealed.
The 30-minute time-limit draw was applauded as one of the best TV matches ever, but many were surprised it didn’t main event the show.
In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote that AEW put Bryan Danielson and Kenny Omega first to make sure it got the full 30 minutes (plus entrances/afterbirth), without having to worry about timing issues or rush things.
For example, if it was saved to be the last thing on the show, there’s a chance other matches before it could go longer than planned, and it wouldn’t be guaranteed that it would get the time it needed to be pulled off how it was.
Another reason was it meant the match only had to have one commercial break during it throughout the full 30 minutes, which wouldn’t have been possible later in the show.
