Johnny Gargano has left WWE, and is now a free agent, a new report from Fightful Select has confirmed.
Gargano had signed a brief contract extension so he could wrestle for NXT at last weekend’s WarGames show, but has not signed a long-term deal, and is therefore free to wrestle for all other promotions immediately.
The report from Fightful notes that WWE made several attempts to re-sign Gargano, and that Gargano has been very private about his decision to allow his contract to expire. The report adds many people within NXT were aware of Gargano’s contract expiring up to a year in advance.
According to Fightful sources, the split was “incredibly amicable”, and the door has been left open for a working relationship in the future.
In terms of the deals offered to Gargano, they are said to have been “much better” than the deal he was offered back in 2019.
It isn’t clear where Gargano will end up next, although rumours have of course begun to circulate about a possible AEW debut in the coming weeks and months.
