Here’s why Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kevin Owens ultimately had a match at WrestleMania 38 following indications that only a brawl was planned.
Before Owens called Austin out on WWE TV, it had been reported that Austin had refused to sign on for a full match at the April 2-3 event.
Despite the segment only being advertised as an edition of the KO Show, Austin confirmed that he was getting into ring shape for the event.
Austin ultimately accepted Owens’ challenge for a No Holds Barred match on WrestleMania 38 Saturday, and pinned the former Universal Champion after almost 14 minutes of action.
Per the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, plans were for Austin to have an extended brawl, as he didn’t want to wrestle a disappointing contest, but plans were changed as Austin felt more comfortable in the ring:
“With Austin vs. Owens, it was to be billed as a match but Austin didn’t want to have a bad match so the plan was for an elongated brawl lasting several minutes. After training, Austin felt comfortable enough to do a match.”
This bout marked Austin’s first full match in 19 years, since losing to The Rock at WrestleMania XIX in 2003.
The Texas Rattlesnake also appeared on WrestleMania 38 Sunday, delivering Stunners to Austin Theory, Pat McAfee and Vince McMahon.
The WWE Chairman’s reaction to his match, and his botched Stunner has now been revealed.
