Charlie Haas has criticised WWE’s booking of Curtis Axel (Joe Henning), arguing that he could’ve been the next Randy Orton.
Henning wrestled on the main roster as both Michael McGillicutty and Curtis Axel over the course of his WWE tenure. The son of Mr Perfect wasn’t really presented as a top star during his time with the company.
Speaking with Liam A Stewart, Haas noted that if he was WWE, he would’ve presented Henning as the third-generation star he was.
The wrestling veteran said:
“Joe Hennig, Curt Hennig’s son, third-generation wrestler, how in the hell can you go out and be a McGillicutty? If you don’t feel comfortable in your own skin, how can you go out and get that guy over? Let him be Joe Hennig. Let him be a third-generation superstar, which he should be, up there with Randy Orton.”
Henning was released from his WWE contract in April 2020 in a round of cuts brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
He returned to the company for a backstage producer tryout this past April.
A large number of stars have left WWE since Henning’s departure, with over 20 let go so far this year alone. Check out a list of every WWE departure of 2022 right here.
