Former Divas Champion AJ Lee has spoken about how WWE Chairman Vince McMahon reacted to her departure from the company.
AJ Lee (AJ Mendez) spent six years with WWE, became their longest reigning Divas Champion at the time and became one of the company’s biggest stars.
Speaking with The Sessions with Renee Paquette, the former WWE star discussed how Vince McMahon reacted to her exit from the promotion in 2015.
She said:
“He was very kind, he was just like the door’s always open if you want to come back. And that to me was – I don’t know, like I know it’s different for some people, but to me, it was so important to go out on top on my own terms. I had seen you can go back, there’s a lot of people who get buried in there at the end and I got to like win at Mania and go.”
“It just all felt like it was the right time, the right way. Couldn’t do anything else. There wasn’t anything else I wanted in my career. Like if I checked everything off. And for it to be like, okay, go fly. You know, I will be free. Yeah, I appreciated that. To me. It was exactly what it needed to be.”
AJ Mendez hasn’t wrestled since April 2015 when she decided to walk away from WWE. She now is the executive producer and commentator for WOW (Women of Wrestling) since October 2021.
As previously mentioned, Mendez also discussed her reaction to CM Punk’s return to wrestling for AEW in the same interview.
