Following his AEW World Championship win, Jon Moxley is now set for a ‘politically weird’ match.
During the September 21 Dynamite: Grand Slam special, Moxley defeated Bryan Danielson in the finals of the Tournament of Champions to win the vacant AEW World Title.
Moxley had notably dropped the gold to CM Punk at All Out, but Punk was forced to relinquish the gold after picking up an injury, and the backstage altercation that took place following his harsh comments during the All Out media scrum.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer pointed out that Moxley is once again holding both the AEW World and GCW World titles.
Explaining why Moxley walking into his major GCW match against Nick Gage with AEW’s top prize would make the situation more interesting from a booking perspective, Meltzer said:
“There’s a Moxley vs Nick Gage GCW match (if Gage loses he has to retire). Moxley wasn’t supposed to be champion at the time, Punk was gonna be champion. But now it’s a politically weird thing because Tony isn’t gonna want his world champion to lose a match on an independent show.
“I dunno how they’re gonna do it, maybe they’ll do it just because of the nature of the stipulation and that they’re backed into a corner.”
Jon Moxley and Nick Gage will face off in a GCW World Title vs Career match at GCW Fight Club in October. It is possible that Moxley will lose the AEW World Championship before then, with MJF teasing that he’ll cash in the poker chip he won in the Casino Ladder Match at All Out for a title shot.
