Brandon Thurston reported earlier this week that WWE had cancelled its Day 1 show, which debuted in 2022, and it looks like we might have an idea as to what might replace it.
WWE currently has a 12 Premium Live Event deal, and if it’s getting rid of Day 1, then there’s every chance a different show will be added at a later date to make up for the shortfall.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that while in general, WWE is trying to cut down on “gimmick” PPVs, but that the return of a King of the Ring Premium Live Event has been discussed.
He wrote:
There is talk of bringing back the King of the Ring tournament with a show that would be both King of the Ring and Queen of the Ring.
He continued by mentioning the reason the original King of the Ring PPV was cancelled.
King of the Ring was dropped as a PPV by Vince McMahon due to drawing weak numbers back in 2002. Today, with no need to have PPVs draw as separate buys, things like not putting on shows that didn’t draw, or having to do the shows in prime time since most of the money comes from the U.S., but now the money is guaranteed by Peacock, changes the dynamic of having the consistent 8 p.m. Eastern time start.
WWE has held King of the Ring and Queen of the Ring tournaments in recent years, but this would be the first time in 20 years that the tournaments get their own show.
