Kevin Owens has revealed that he reached out to Cody Rhodes ahead of Survivor Series WarGames.
KO was revealed as the fifth and final member announced for the Brawling Brutes WarGames team for their Survivor Series bout against The Bloodline.
The WarGames match consists of two teams thrashing it out in two rings inside a steel cage.
Dusty Rhodes is credited as the creator of the match type, which was originally used in Jimmy Crockett Promotions in NWA and later, WCW and WWE.
Survivor Series WarGames 2022 saw the match move to the main roster after five years on NXT’s annual live event schedule.
Kevin Owens paid tribute to Dusty Rhodes with his ring gear by wearing a red ‘bionic’ elbow pad and a t-shirt with Rhodes on it.
In his latest appearance on After the Bell with Corey Graves, Owens recalled the conversation he had with Dusty’s son, Cody Rhodes, prior to the event.
Owens said:
“To be part of the first one on the main roster, I took the opportunity to wear Dusty’s shirt and the red elbow pad as a tribute to him.
“I talked to Cody beforehand and made sure he was cool with it and everything.
“It’s just always neat to be able to tie back to history and give Dusty a little nod. I try to do that as much as I can.”
Kevin Owens recalled the brief but influential time he spent training under Dusty Rhodes at the WWE Performance Center, noting:
“He was so influential in my career. I really had access to him for a really short period of time, we’re talking maybe ten months between the time I started in NXT and the time he passed.
“But man, in those ten months he really left a mark on me like nobody has.”
Cody Rhodes has been out of action since June after suffering a torn pectoral muscle. A positive update on his recovery was shared recently.
Kevin Owens also confirmed that he is currently working through a knee injury.
