A new report has provided an update on CM Punk claiming Tony Khan wanted him to wrestle while not medically cleared.
On Thursday, CM Punk caused a stir in the wrestling world with a now-deleted Instagram post where he laid into AEW, Tony Khan, Chris Jericho and others.
In the post, Punk claimed that AEW and Tony Khan wanted him to wrestle Jon Moxley in the AEW Undisputed World Championship match on the August 24, 2022 episode of AEW Dynamite without being medically cleared from his foot injury suffered months earlier.
The subsequent match went less than three minutes with Moxley defeating Punk to become the Undisputed AEW World Champion before losing the title back to Punk at AEW All Out 2022.
Fightful Select (subscription required) have provided an update, noting that those familiar with the situation say that Punk had communicated that he wasn’t comfortable competing in any capacity without being cleared first for the August 24 match.
The report notes that there had been issues regarding the creative in the build to the match. Fightful previously reported that there were concerns that Punk wouldn’t appear on the August 17 edition of Dynamite leading into the bout.
Special travel arrangements were made to accommodate Punk the day of the match, and Punk had at least floated the idea of additional reimbursement for the match with him working without being cleared, per his claims.
