Former 16-time World Champion John Cena is set to make a surprise return to WWE television on tonight’s (September 1) episode of SmackDown.
Alongside tonight’s SmackDown show, Cena is scheduled for many appearances throughout the months of September and October, though that doesn’t necessarily mean he will appear on television.
Cena’s run has been unexpected, even to WWE, due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, and we now know how Cena’s run could be affected if the strikes were to end.
Per Fightful Select (subscription required), staff, producers and some writers in the company that Fightful heard from regarding Cena said that his availablilty came as a result of the ongoing strike, and that WWE reached an agreement to bring him in.
One higher up said that, in the event that Cena is appearing on TV regularly and the strike ends, the company will wrap up anything he’s involved in, and he will return to his outside projects.
However, there is no concern in WWE about him missing advertised dates in the event that the strike ends abruptly.
WWE reportedly has a role planned for Cena for this Saturday’s WWE Payback premium live event, which you can see here.
A major match for Cena has reportedly been discussed for this return run, which you can see here.
