Ahead of his announced return, the real reason for the 14-month absence of a WWE star has now been revealed.
With WWE set to put on the Superstar Spectacle 2023 event from Hyderabad, India (September 8), the company has pulled out many stops to appease the local audience including the in-ring return of 16-time world champion John Cena and potentially even the return of The Great Khali.
However, one other surprise came courtesy of an announcement from WWE India on Twitter that Indian WWE star Shanky, who hadn’t been seen on TV since July 2022, was returning for the event.
While Shanky’s former on-screen allies Jinder Mahal and Veer have worked as Indus Sher (along with Sanga) on both NXT and now Raw, Shanky has gone missing and is currently without a designated brand.
What has added to the confusion was the lack of information on the reasoning for Shanky’s absence, however, now courtesy of Dave Meltzer’s latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, we may have some clarity, partially at least.
Meltzer writes while discussing Superstar Spectacle:
Shanky, who hasn’t wrestled in 14 months, some of that period due to injury and the rest because they haven’t brought him back, will be working the show.
So, while not the full picture at least we now know that some of Shanky’s absence was at least in relation to injury, however, we still don’t know how serious this was and it sounds like it may not have been the entire reason for him missing over a year of action.
Elsewhere, in other surprising news in relation to Superstar Spectacle, a top NXT star is also set to make an appearance – for more information click here.
