10 Big Stars Who Used To Wrestle Under Masks

7. Christopher Daniels – Curry Man, Suicide

Christopher Daniels’ career has been a perfect example of how you can be successful without working for WWE. Over the years, Daniels has reinvented himself a number of times, particularly in TNA. As he was fired in storyline, Daniels returned to the company under a mask.

One mask was that of Curry Man. This was a comedy gimmick, however, he was able to capture the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships with Bryan Danielson while utilizing it.

Daniels also wrestled as the Suicide character in TNA. While a storyline would ultimately prove Daniels was not the masked man, in reality he was the one wrestling the matches to get the character off the ground.

6. Daniel Bryan – The American Dragon

Before he was Daniel Bryan, he was The American Dragon. One of the greatest technical wrestlers of all time, Daniel Bryan/Bryan Danielson spent an early chunk of his career wearing a mask as The American Dragon. While most of his Ring of Honor career and all of his WWE career came while being unmasked, many still have fond memories of Bryan’s run as a masked wrestler.

5. Jeff Cobb – Matanza Cueto

Jeff Cobb is an incredibly handsome, charismatic performer and he would have good reason to not want his face covered. That being said, his look in Lucha Underground as Matanza Cueto is horror movie-esque. The brother of owner Dario Cueto, Matanza wore an all-black horror mask and it was fantastic.

It is unlikely that we will ever see this look again, given that Cobb is currently seeing his stock rise with Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling, but for those who saw it in Lucha Underground, they experienced a real treat.

4. Sami Zayn – El Generico

This is another one that is likely known by more people than others. Sami Zayn has been a delightful character in WWE in 2013, but he was exciting fans long before that. While wrestling in Ring of Honor, PWG and other promotions, he worked as El Generico.

While the gimmick of being the generic luchador might not inspire confidence from fans, his talent did. For a while Generico’s real gimmick was that he would have the best match on every show he was on. If you doubt that, go back and watch them.
