AEW World Tag Team Championship plans after All Out despite in-ring injury

AEW All Out saw the next steps established for the World Tag Team Championship in two separate matches, despite an in-ring injury.

Taking place on September 26, AEW All Out saw Kyle Fletcher & Kevin Knight take on Darby Allin & Steven Borden to determine the number one contenders for the World Tag Team Championship, with the Don Callis Family members gaining the victory by referee stoppage.

The match would be cut short after a coast-to-coast saw Steven Borden sustain an injury, with Tony Khan providing an update that the star had undergone a CT scan and the “tests have come back good” in comments made during the post-show press conference.

Later at All Out, the AEW World Tag Team Championship would change hands in a three-way ladder match, with Cage & Cope losing the titles to The Young Bucks in a match that also featured FTR.

With new World Tag Team Champions and new challengers, plans are no doubt afoot for the match to take place:

AEW Grand Slam: France & Beyond

Taking place on October 6, AEW Grand Slam: France will see Will Ospreay defend the World Championship against Kazuchika Okada and could very well have more than one title match on the card for the company’s debut in Paris.

Whether the Young Bucks will put the title on the line against Fletcher & Knight in just over a week or indulge in shenanigans to delay the match remains to be seen, but there’s something to be said for delaying it to allow breathing room between the title change and the first challenge.

The next major stop after AEW All Out is WrestleDream on October 17, with Full Gear taking place on November 14, both of which could be a home for the number one contenders to face the champions.

Fletcher & Knight Ascendant

Kyle Fletcher is convinced that he and Kevin Knight are not a tag team, despite all the signs to the contrary.

They may not yet be called FletchKnight, but they’ve had a degree of success since teaming together for the first time in early September, including a victory over The Young Bucks in a tag team tables match on the Rebel Heart episode of Dynamite.

Fletcher, in particular, has established himself as a top star in AEW, while Knight has begun to ascend the ladder since joining the Don Callis Family.

Everybody needs a family

For the Young Bucks, they are family. With Fletcher and Knight, they are both members of the Don Callis Family.

While Callis may occasionally manipulate proceedings, there’s little doubt that the members of his family have had individual successes of their own.

Pushed in the right direction, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Fletcher and Knight claim the AEW World Tag Team Championship, not necessarily on their first attempt, but certainly down the line.

If there’s anyone who can keep the team’s eye on the prize, it’s Don Callis.

Darby Allin & Steven Borden

With Borden out of action, any plans for the tag team with Darby Allin are on hold until such a time that he is cleared for an in-ring return.

In an ideal world, that return would see Allin & Borden go after the AEW World Tag Team Championship once again, potentially crossing paths with Fletcher & Knight to demonstrate just what could have happened had the match not been brought to an end.

A Record-Breaking Reign Should Be A Stepping Stone

For The Young Bucks, they are now in their fourth reign as AEW World Tag Team Champions, with entertaining matches no doubt ahead.

That said, the veterans would likely be best served if their reign didn’t come anywhere close to the 302 days of their first run, but should perhaps go further than the 28 days of their second.

Using The Young Bucks as a stepping stone to elevate a younger tag team as champions would be a worthwhile use for the stars, particularly when factoring in the rise of Kyle Fletcher as a singles star and the status of Kevin Knight alongside him.
