WrestleTalk Writers Predict: WWE Backlash

Q1) Which Women’s Championship match is more likely to end in a new champion?

Kevin Cavanagh: Carmella vs. Charlotte Flair. First, some statistics. Alexa Bliss has held the Raw Women’s Championship for a combined 335 days and the Smackdown Women’s Championship for a combined 111 days. Charlotte Flair has held the Raw Women’s Championship for a combined 246 days and the Smackdown Women’s Championship for a combined 147 days. The Raw title debuted on April 3rd, 2016 and the Smackdown title debuted on September 11th, 2016. At the time of this writing, Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair account for 839 / 1359 (61.74%) days of holding the Women’s championships. It’s very rare one of these woman doesn’t have a title. So while Carmella and Nia Jax are both new champions, I believe the WWE is more likely to build Nia Jax into a dominant, defending champion. Carmella defeating Charlotte clean would pose problems for a rumored WrestleMania 35 main event match against Ronda Rousey. Obviously, the IIconics could get involved here to alleviate this problem. That said, I think Charlotte is more likely to regain her title.

Nick Martinez: Carmella vs. Charlotte Flair. To be honest, I don’t think we will see any title changes with the Women’s matches. Both Carmella and Nia Jax recently won their respective titles; I believe that the powers that be want Nia to establish herself as a dominant champ (as well as Ronda isn’t ready to lead the division yet) and they want Charlotte to chase Carmella for a while. Also on the Smackdown Live side, The IIconics are in the picture and will probably cost Charlotte the match on Sunday. So don’t expect to see any new champions in the Women’s division. But if I had to choose, I think that Charlotte might pull out a win considering the circumstances surrounding Carmella’s cash in and title win.

Brian Joyce: Nia Jax vs. Alexa Bliss. WWE is known for their love of heel champions and they have shown a lot of faith in Alexa Bliss over the last year. I believe Bliss will get the belt back to wrestle new babyfaces on Raw.

Zack Tabb: Carmella vs. Charlotte Flair. The Smackdown Live Women’s championship is much more likely to change hands than its Raw counterpart. I expect both Women’s champions to retain, but I like Charlotte’s odds against Carmella a lot more than Alexa’s against Jax. WrestleMania 34 proved Charlotte can win any pay-per-view match, whether it makes sense or not – and as long as Nia Jax’s feud with Alexa Bliss is centered around bullying and body shaming, I don’t see Alexa picking up any sort of victory.
