WWE Money in the Bank: Betting Trends, Part 1

WWE Money in the Bank: Betting Trends, Part 1

Today, I look at the betting trends leading up to WWE Money in the Bank. Opening lines for Money in the Bank were released on May 12th, 36 days prior to the event. Thus, I will do this feature in 2 parts. In this part, we look at the odds 36 days out, 29 days out, and 22 days out to try and understand the trends. In part 2, we look at the odds 15 days out, 7 days out, and 24 hours before to see if anything has changed.

Two things before we get into the odds for Money in the Bank: (1) Betting odds for WWE represent possible spoilers. While it is not a certainty, they are right more often than not. So if you don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading now! (2) A quick reminder of how American betting odds work in case you are used to another format:

A “favorite” is given a negative number. This is the amount of money that needs to be placed on that competitor to win $100. For example, if someone is a -300 favorite, you need to bet $300 to potentially win $100. If you win the bet, you get $400 back (your original $300 and your $100 profit). If you lose the bet, you lose your $300. -300 = 1/3 in fractional odds.

An “underdog” is given a positive number. This is the amount of money you will WIN so long as you bet $100. For example, if someone is a +450 underdog, you need to bet $100 to potentially win $450. If you win the bet, you get $550 back (your original $100 and your $450 profit). If you lose the bet, you lose your $100. +450 = 9/2 in fractional odds.

Kevin’s Thoughts: For those confused, sometimes in matches like Money in the Bank or the Royal Rumble the early odds list everyone as an “underdog” because there are too many participants and not enough information yet to distance someone from the pack. That is why everyone in both the men and women’s matches currently has “underdog” odds.

Looking at the odds, it seems the best odds are currently given to the men and women who have already qualified. The lone exception is Big E sitting at +225 in the men’s match. It seems like the rumors that Big E is going to get a big push and break from The New Day is baked into these odds. At the time of this update, the matchup between The New Day and The Bar is still 48 hours away, so this seems to point to that matchup being the start of this push given Cesaro and Sheamus do not appear on the top 10.

At the moment, I’d say these odds are too fresh to make any sense of them. If anything, it gives us an idea who will be qualifying in the coming weeks.
