From Tokyo to New Orleans
Oh, hey, did you guys know that AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura have wrestled before? In Japan? I’m not sure it gets mentioned enough.
The sentence “AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania” would have been dismissed as fantasy or lunacy just a few years ago. Now, in 2018, it is very much a reality and I am psyched.
Whilst the two men will meet one-on-one for the first time in the WWE tonight, the two have squared off before, most notably in New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), where they fought over the IWGP Intercontinental Championship at NJPW’s version of WrestleMania, Wrestle Kingdom, in 2016.
This will make Styles vs. Nakamura the first match in history to take place at both WWE‘s WrestleMania and NJPW‘s Wrestle Kingdom.
The fact that, after tonight, Styles and Nakamura will have had marquee matches at the two biggest annual wrestling shows in the world goes to show just how talented these two men are.
More importantly, it gives a pretty good indicator of how great their match will be. I can only imagine how Dave Meltzer is feeling right now. He’ll probably cry.
