Change To AEW Continental Classic Tournament Confirmed AEW

A change to the format of the AEW Continental Classic for this year’s edition of the tournament has been confirmed.

Specifically, a change in how the semi-finals will be determined was announced, as well as when they’ll take place.

The bulk of the format is the same, with two ‘leagues’ (blue and gold) each made up of six participants who’ll face each other in a round-robin format – each win earns a competitor 3 points, while it’s 1 point each if a match goes to a time-limit draw.

The semi-finals will feature the top two participants in each league’s standings once the round-robin phase is over – but with a change this year.

Last year, the semi-finals were place #1 and #2 in the Blue League against each other, and #1 and #2 in the Gold League against each other.

This time around, it’ll actually be #1 in Blue vs #2 in Gold, and #1 Gold vs #2 in Blue.

That means the final could end up being two participants from the same league if they both win that semi-final match, but it could also be Blue vs Gold if one from each comes through the semis.

Also confirmed – both semi-finals and the final will be held on the same night at the AEW Worlds End pay-per-view, meaning the finalists will wrestle twice that night.

On tonight’s Dynamite, the first match of the 2024 AEW Continental Classic tournament saw Shelton Benjamin pick up a win over Mark Briscoe and capture the first three points in the Blue League.

Still to come tonight are two Gold League matches as Darby Allin faces Brody King, and Claudio Castagnoli takes on Ricochet.
