AEW Women’s Champion Toni Storm has criticised the decision to introduce an interim women’s title last year following Thunder Rosa’s injury.
Ahead of All Out 2022, Thunder Rosa revealed that due to her injury, she was unable to compete at the event. Instead of Rosa defending her gold, a match for the interim AEW Women’s Championship took place instead.
Toni Storm was ultimately victorious in this bout, and reigned as the company’s interim champion, while Thunder Rosa held the official title while on the shelf.
Storm reigned with the gold for 76 days, before dropping the interim title to Jamie Hayter at Full Gear 2022.
On the following edition of Dynamite, Thunder Rosa officially vacated the gold, and AEW retroactively made the interim title reign an official one.
While AEW now recognises Storm’s reign as an official one, throughout the entire time she held the title, she was referred to as an interim champion.
At Double or Nothing 2023, Storm defeated Hayter to win the AEW Women’s Title for a second time.
During the post-show media scrum, Storm noted that her victory felt special this time, noting that this is how her last run with the gold should’ve felt.
Criticising the decision-making surrounding the interim and official titles, Storm said:
“It felt extra special this time. I’m sure we can all agree that the interim thing was bulls**t. Right, Tony? Crazy.
“That was a tough, terrible time. It feels great because this is what it should have been the whole time.”
Also during the press conference, MJF shared his honest thoughts on a creative call regarding his title match, which you can read more about right here.
