The numbers are in following last night’s AEW: Dynamite and WWE NXT premiere episodes, and it’s AEW that has dealt the first blow in the Wednesday Night Wars.
Dynamite drew an extremely impressive 1.4 million viewers, compared to NXT’s 891,000, as per The Wrap.
That Dynamite number is so impressive given the expected number within the industry, as noted by Dave Meltzer, was between 500,000 and 600,000.
In the key 18-49 demographic, AEW again smashed NXT, drawing 878,000 viewers compared to 414,000, more than doubling WWE’s yellow brand’s audience in the demo. Funnily enough, that NXT 18-49 number is actually up 1% from last week.
The interesting thing now is to see if AEW can retain that audience, or whether some of the shocks that happened on NXT will be enough to pull viewers back in its favour next week.
Either way, it’s an exciting time to be a wrestling fan.
We will of course continue to have live coverage of both shows each Wednesday here at WrestleTalk.com.
