AEW/NJPW
An NJPW star has seemingly teased an AEW return after an appearance at Forbidden Door was reportedly scrapped due to injury.
With AEW Forbidden Door in the record books, it was reported that Gabe Kidd, Callum Newman, Tomohiro Ishii and Sareee were all set to feature on the June 28 pay-per-view.
Callum Newman was identified as the injured star who lost out on a Forbidden Door appearance, seemingly tied to Jon Moxley’s match on the show.
Newman has been out of action since NJPW Dominion on June 14, losing the IWGP Heavyweight Championship to Yota Tsuji.
Post-match, Newman was seen favoring his shoulder, with it later being reported that he had suffered a dislocation during the match.
With plans for Forbidden Door not coming to fruition, Newman would take to Twitter with a pertinent question, asking:
“Is the door still open?”
Newman is no stranger to AEW, having competed on the April 8 episode of Dynamite this year, reuniting with Will Ospreay as United Empire (inc. HENARE & Francesco Akira) defeated Death Riders (Claudio Castagnoli, Daniel Garcia, John Moxley & PAC) in the Chaos in Canada match.
Ospreay has since gone on to be associated with the Death Riders, winning the men’s Owen Hart Tournament final at Forbidden Door.
The Mirror Shattered
For a brief period, it seemed that Will Ospreay and Callum Newman were back on the same page, with the Death Riders as their objective.
Friends or rivals, Ospreay and Newman had a long-running relationship, with the AEW star seeing the growth of his protege as an NJPW star, a path The Aerial Assassin had trodden years before.
Newman’s ambition may have driven a wedge between himself and Ospreay, particularly when it came to the United Empire, but it was also destined to be brothers reunited, even if the relationship was a tad fractious from time to time.
It’s clear that Newman has all the tools at his disposal to succeed Ospreay when the moment comes. An IWGP Heavyweight Champion and two-time IWGP Tag Team Champion, Newman has already set himself on the course to greatness in his own right.
As for Ospreay, he stands as the third NJPW Grand Slam Champion in company history, having recently secured the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team championship with his United Empire teammates, HENARE and Great-O-Khan.
Ospreay and Newman may be separated by continents, but their paths will no doubt cross when the NJPW star is fit to make a return.
