After recently re-signing with the company on new terms, a veteran AEW star has revealed that they are planning to retire from in-ring competition in three years time.
Despite holding both the ROH Tag Team and ROH Six-Man Tag Team Championships throughout the latter half of 2024, speculation was abound regarding the future of Dustin Rhodes in AEW, with his contract reported to be up in the Fall.
While he continued to work beyond that point, all talk was put to rest on December 24, when Rhodes confirmed via social media that he had re-signed with AEW on a multi-year deal.
He would also confirm that he was planning to end his in-ring career in the company, and in an appearance on the Battleground Podcast Rhodes revealed his plans for his retirement.
Revealing that he plans to hang up his boots in three years, Rhodes said:
“I have had this planned the last couple of years of who I want to finish up with. That’s going to take place in three years. It’s going to be tough to step away.
“By no means am I anywhere on Sting’s level, but I want that same kind of out. I think I’ve earned it.”
Unlike many other legends however, Rhodes doesn’t plan on losing his final match, with The Natural discussing the importance of earning a victory at the end of his career:
“I want to win. I want to win that last match. I don’t want to lose. It means a lot to me, and I have been putting a lot of thought into it.
“I would say probably about three years. Things change. We’ll see where they take us. It’s hard enough to even say, ‘It’s almost time, Dustin.’ That’s tough.”
On this week’s AEW Dynamite (February 12) Rhodes takes on MJF in singles action following a fiery promo between the two on the previous Wednesday’s show.
Due to AEW Grand Slam Australia this Saturday (February 15) Dynamite was pre-taped ahead of time, click here for full spoilers on Rhodes vs. MJF and the rest of the show.
