After finishing his story at WrestleMania XL, Cody Rhodes has arguably been this generation’s ace of the company, with him going on to hold the title three times in the years since.
With Cody continuing to reign at the top of the company, fans have slowly begun to get tired of the American Nightmare’s run as the top babyface, just as they did with John Cena and Roman Reigns in the years past.
Cody has now been teasing bringing out a ‘darker’ side of his character during his feud with Randy Orton, evidenced by the Punt to Baron Corbin on last week’s SmackDown.
Cody Rhodes acknowledges ‘Cody Fatigue’
During an interview on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Cody Rhodes opened up on his future in wrestling.
Cody noted that he recently signed what he believes is his final contract with the company, and that he likely has only another six or seven years left in him before he calls it a career.
Cody went on to reflect on his run, starting out as a midcard wrestler as part of Legacy before going on to become undeniable as the American Nightmare, but did note that ‘Cody fatigue has set in’.
How would Cody turn heel?
As it stands, the current story between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton has an obvious payoff leading to a double turn with both men, as although Randy Orton is portrayed as the heel in the story, with his legendary status among fans, it is getting increasingly more difficult for him to get booed by the crowd.
The ultimate blow off match between Cody and Randy, that would likely end with Cody punting Randy in the head, would be the perfect platform to pull the trigger on the double turn, with heel Cody then going on to set up his WrestleMania match, likely against CM Punk.
Who is ready to replace him?
When the idea of turning Cody heel has come up in the past, the question has always been on if there are any new names ready to step up and replace him as the face of the company.
Now, it seems pretty apparent that Oba Femi is the next top star, with fans taking to the Ruler almost instantly, and his victory over Brock Lesnar cementing him as the next Next Big Thing.
Although, there is nothing to say that the next face of WWE has to be a men’s wrestler, as Rhea Ripley has also more than proven she’s popular and good enough to carry that torch if WWE is prepared to let their women do so.
