With Mercedes Mone holding twelve championships, a fellow AEW star has shared their honest thoughts on her ‘Ultimo Moné’ run.
Moné captured her twelfth championship on October 19: defeating Jody Threat for the Winnipeg Pro Wrestling Women’s Title.
Of her 12 title reigns, Moné holds two prizes in AEW: the TBS Championship and the Interim ROH Women’s World Television Championship. Moné will also soon have an opportunity to add a 13th title, as she teams with Athena in the tournament to determine the inaugural AEW Women’s Tag Team Championships.
Moné and Athena’s opponents in the tournament will be Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron, and ahead of their match they spoke with SHAK Wrestling, with Cameron being asked to share her thoughts about Moné’s current quest to win every title available to her.
Describing Moné’s run as “only a good thing” for the promotions and wrestlers she works with, Cameron said:
“I think the reality is Mercedes is undeniably one of the greatest wrestlers. She has done so much for women’s wrestling throughout the longevity of her career and she is undeniable in that regard.
“When I wrestled her in Australia, I had moments, internally, where I’m like ‘do I deserve this opportunity, do I deserve to be here’, because the reality is – love it or hate it – when you do wrestle Mercedes, it is a huge opportunity. It’s a huge opportunity for the individual.
“If she’s going to do these different matches in different companies, at the end of the da,y she is a star and there is eyes on the things she does. There’s nothing wrong with the world becoming more aware of multiple wrestling industries that they weren’t aware about before, companies they might not have heard about before, and personally as a performer it is an opportunity when you get to wrestle a legend in their own right.”
While the opportunity may be there, Cameron did concede the challenge of facing a star with the caliber of Mercedes Mone, stating:
“What are your chances in the ring with somebody who is legendary in that status? It’s going to be a difficult match, it’s going to be hard to pull through and come out on top.
“But the reality is I think the more people learning about more companies, and more people getting more opportunities is only a good thing.”
