People have been wanting to see AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling stars wrestle since AEW’s launch in 2019. Now, AEW star Eddie Kingston has named one of New Japan’s top stars as his dream opponent.
During his appearance on Renee Paquette’s Oral Sessions, Eddie Kingston named Hiroshi Tanahashi as one of his dream opponents, calling Tanahashi the “Stone Cold Steve Austin of New Japan”. He also named Jun Akiyama as another of his dream opponents. Here is the quote, courtesy of Wrestling News:
“Tanahashi is number one. Stone Cold Steve Austin is my favorite American wrestler. So, to me, Tanahashi is Stone Cold Steve Austin of New Japan. He saved that company. I want to step into an All Japan Pro Wrestling ring because I loved All Japan Pro Wrestling in the ‘90s with the four pillars, Misawa, Taue, Kawada, and my personal favorite of all time, Kenta Kobashi. But I need this. It’s not even a want. I need me vs. Jun Akiyama. That would be the cap on everything.”
Hiroshi Tanahashi has only had one match with an AEW star since the promotion’s launch. That match came against Chris Jericho at Wrestle Kingdom 14 in January 2020.
