AEW star Willow Nightingale has revealed that a current WWE star previously encouraged her to ask for a tryout with WWE.
While Willow has established herself as a star within the AEW ring, the rising talent has revealed that prior to her signing with the promotion, she considered asking for a WWE tryout.
Speaking on Talk Is Jericho, Nightingale noted that Chelsea Green told her to reach out to WWE while Nightingale was still a free agent.
When asked if she’s ever had talks with WWE, Willow replied:
“No. No. I had done extra work maybe two or three times. One time, I was doing extra work, and Chelsea Green encouraged me to be like, ‘Why don’t you just ask? It’s honestly that simple. The worst thing that can happen is they say no.’ I was like, ‘Alright, maybe. I’ll build myself up to that. I’ll get there.
(Clarifying that she was encouraged to ask for a tryout, not a contract) “No, not a contract, a tryout. I hadn’t even had a tryout. Also, around that time, there were all these talks of ‘if you’re over a certain age they’re not really interested in you.’ Around that time, I was 26 or so and I was like, ‘I’m so old,’ which is crazy. There was a lot of talking myself out of it.”
Willow Nightingale started doing extra work for AEW in 2021, before officially signing with the promotion in 2022.
During her time as an AEW star, Nightingale defeated Mercedes Mone to become the inaugural NJPW Strong Women’s Champion at the Resurgence 2023 event. She went on to win the AEW Women’s Owen Hart Cup later that year.
Willow is slated to challenge for Julia Hart’s TBS Championship at this Sunday’s Dynasty pay-per-view.
