Andre Chance, formerly known as Andre Chase, has revealed how his Chase University character came to be in WWE.

During his time in WWE, Andre Chase and his Chase U faction were among the most popular acts in NXT, and now that he’s departed the company, he’s revealed how it all came about.

Having spoken previously about how WWE originally wanted to hire him as a coach instead of as an active wrestler, Chance played that into his character at time when NXT 2.0 was being introduced and everyone needed larger than life personas.

Speaking on Duke Hanson’s Between Two Jobs show, Chance explained:

“Road Dogg, still being in creative at that time, he would lead promo class at that time. So the directive was, ‘I don’t care what it is, everybody in this promo class has to come up with a character.’ That was the directive for our class. Everybody had to be very well defined.

“I was like, ‘What can I be? Well, they wanted me as a coach, I enjoy teaching people anyway, how can I make this more of a wrestling character?’ That was the first time in promo class I did this Andre Chase University thing. But it was as a bad guy character.

“The first one that I did, I thought it was very good and I’d still like to use it one day so I hope nobody steals this, was that I was giving un-asked-for advice. There’s nothing more annoying than somebody giving you advice that 1) you don’t respect, or 2) you didn’t ask for their advice.

“So during promo class, I walked to the ring, I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m leaving this feedback box in the middle of the ring, because I know all of you guys wanna ask me so many questions, but I don’t really change in the same locker room as you guys, so just leave your questions in the box and I’ll come back and get to them when I can. So that was the first part, and I was like, ‘Next week, I’ll do the second part.’

“So the next week, I’m opening the feedback box, expecting these great questions. One of them was like, ‘F**k off,’ one of them was like.. everything dogging me, and then that’s when I lost it, that’s when I became what Shawn saw of the Andre Chase character.

“I f**king kicked the box over and I slammed it and I was like, ‘These kids don’t wanna show me respect! Blah blah blah, whatever.’ I just lost it. And Road Dogg is dying laughing.

“He showed that promo to Shawn. Shawn’s a big college basketball fan, so what became of my – the red sweater – there was a very outspoken college basketball coach named Bobby Knight. He was crazy. He would throw chairs, if a call didn’t go his way, he would throw chairs, he choked one of his kids one time, he was just crazy, right?

“Shawn knew I was a college basketball fan. Shawn’s a college basketball fan. When he saw me flip out like that, he said it reminded him of Bobby Knight. So he was like, ‘He can be a coach and he can be like Bobby Knight.'”

Elsewhere in the interview, Andre Chance (formerly Chase) also praised original Chase U member Bodhi Hayward, saying:

“Love him. He gave everything he had to Chase U. I needed somebody at that point who believed in it as much as I did, or it wasn’t gonna work. And I told him that. He was like, ‘I’ve got you.’

“He rode till the end. Anybody who would listen, he would tell them, ‘Andre Chase is great, Mr Chase is great.’ I needed somebody to believe in it as much as I did if it was gonna get there.

“When Thea came along, she did. She bought in immediately, she got it. That’s why it worked so well.”
