Andre Chance, formerly Andre Chase, has recalled being told outright that he was never going to be on TV after joining WWE.

Chance previously spoke about how WWE originally wanted to hire him as a coach, but he opted to take a lower salary to sign as a wrestler instead.

Expanding further on that during the latest edition of Duke Hanson’s Between Two Jobs, he discussed how when he did sign as a wrestler, he was told he’d never be on TV, and his job was simply to work with the younger talents and help them develop before they became stars.

That was until Shawn Michaels watched a match between Chance and Julius Creed, and then immediately put Chance on TV.

He explained:

“If he said it once on this phone call, he said it 100 times. He said, ‘I just need you to know, you’re not gonna be a TV star. You’re not gonna be on TV at all actually. You are just here to train and work with this next group of guys,’ who they had alread chosen – Bron Breakker, Trick Williams, Tony D’Angelo, the Creeds, Melo.

“I think the idea was if I was gonna be a coach, I was gonna coach the young guys. That was gonna be my class.

“I enjoy these challenges, I really do. The more he told me on this phone call I wasn’t gonna be on TV, I was like, ‘Okay, let me in the building.’ I just knew I needed to get in.

“So they were like, ‘You’re only here for them. You’re only here so they can learn from you, so you can teach them. You’re not gonna be on TV.’

“And again, if he said it on this phone call once, he said it 100 times. He was trying so hard to get me to take the coaching job. And I was just like, ‘Nope, I’m gonna take the wrestling.’

“‘You’re gonna take less money?!’ ‘Yes, I said that.’ ‘But you know you’re not gonna be on TV?!’ I’m telling you, every time.

“Then I report to the PC, and I’m told by the coaches, ‘Make sure you understand you’re not gonna be on TV.’ ‘Yes. I’ve got it. I understand. I’m just supposed to work the PC Lives. I get it. Okay. Fine.’

“Sure enough, this one day, I’m working a PC Live with Julius Creed. Shawn happens to wander over. He didn’t come to every PC Live.

“It was Julius Creed’s third or fourth match, he hadn’t had a lot of matches. He was obviously gonna be a tag team with his brother, but he was just having a few singles matches here and there. We had a really good match, and luckily Shawn was there to see it.

“So afterwards we get feedback and go to the coaches, and Shawn’s like, ‘Why aren’t you on TV?’ And I go, ‘Oh, I don’t know, I was told I wasn’t gonna be on TV.’ And he was like, ‘Well, why not?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know, they just told me that I wasn’t gonna be on TV.’ He goes, ‘We’ve gotta get you on TV.’

“And the next week I was on 205 Live. It only takes that one – literally, your life can change in one match.”

WWE’s Missed Opportunity With Chase U

WWE very clearly missed a trick with Chase U, who could easily have become as popular on the main roster as they were in NXT.

Since their break-up, the majority of the group isn’t even with the company anymore, with only Thea Hail remaining.

Hail, who via her role in Chase U was at one point one of the most popular women in NXT, now struggles for TV time aside from her accidental Women’s North American Title win a few months ago.

Even with all the other members gone, Hail could easily be up in the NXT Women’s Title picture, but she just hasn’t been focused on for the past year and a half, which is a real shame.
