What got a lot of fans talking during D-Generation X’s WWE Hall of Fame induction speech the night before WrestleMania 35 was the fact that Triple H took shots at All Elite Wrestling.
One of the running jokes of the speech was that Vince McMahon didn’t want to be mentioned, and Triple H joked that he could be fired by his father-in-law for doing so. Billy Gunn said Vince could fire him, a reference to the fact that he is now employed as a producer by AEW. Triple H would then hilariously say that Vince would buy that “piss-ant” company just to fire Gunn again.
Throughout the speech, Triple H would also say that people suddenly feel more entitled if they have “Executive Vice President” as part of their name. This was a possible jab at AEW’s Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega and Young Bucks.
Billy Gunn spoke on the 411 Wrestling Podcast and was asked about Triple H’s comments. Gunn felt that what he said did no damage to WWE, nor AEW.
“Yeah, I mean, come on. It’s not a secret! We all know what’s going on, we all know what’s happening. It had nothing—yeah, it’s funny and everybody’s gonna react to it, and it’s not taboo. Because everyone’s talking [like] ‘Well, you work for AEW now. How can you be in the Hall of Fame.’ It’s not about working for WWE”.
Gunn would go on to add that like most of the fans watching, he actually found Triple H’s comments to be hilarious:
“It’s about being recognized as a part of wrestling, as being part of one of the greatest things that ever happened to wrestling. So, yeah, it was funny, I thought it was hilarious, it was well-done. It wasn’t meant by no means to hurt either/or feelings. Either AEW’s feelings or WWE’s feelings. But you can’t walk around like it’s not something. Like, it’s not happening, right?”
