A backstage update has emerged on the WWE return of Brock Lesnar, following his appearance at SummerSlam.

Brock Lesnar made his first wrestling appearance in two years at the August 3 SummerSlam show, attacking John Cena following Cena losing the WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes.

Per Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE’s legal department cleared Lesnar for a return four weeks ago.

Meltzer noted the following:

“Four weeks ago, WWE Legal cleared him.

“I do know, everyone figured this out but I can tell you also, factually, that the reason they didn’t do the press conferences was because of this angle.”

Mike Johnson of PWInsider reported hours before Brock’s appearance that WWE hand flown him into New Jersey during the night of August 2 and hid him well all day on August 3.

Per this report, there had been talk of a surprise that even company writers were kept in the dark about, and “this was obviously it.”

After a break following SummerSlam 2023, Lesnar was scheduled for a return to WWE at the 2024 Royal Rumble, but was pulled from the show due to being referred to in the sexual abuse & trafficking lawsuit against Vince McMahon and WWE that was filed days prior. During his two-year absence, Lesnar had remained listed on the current WWE roster on the company’s official website.
