Clarification has emerged regarding whether New Japan Pro Wrestling or World Wonder Ring Stardom is booking the IWGP Women’s championship.
The new champion will be crowned via a tournament, which will culminate at the upcoming co-promoted Historic X-Over event inside Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan, on November 20.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Stardom maintains control over the booking of the newly-formed title.
This is despite the fact that the belt will primarily be defended at NJPW-branded events, including those in North America and bigger Japan-based shows such as Wrestle Kingdom.
So far only one match to determine the new champion has taken place, as Jazzy Gabbert defeated Ava White at NJPW Royal Quest II on October 2.
Gabbert will go on to face KAIRI, known to WWE fans as the former Kairi Sane, in the tournament’s semi-finals.
Other quarter-final matches will include Mayu Iwatani vs Momo Wantanabe, and Himeka vs Utami Hayashishita.
